It is with a sad and heavy heart we announce the passing of one of the last true "Crickers" from Scamotion Creek Avenue along Route 9 North just south of the Plattsburgh City Beach. Herman Arthur Stone
Herman died at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday morning, April 19th, 2019. Herman was 99 years old; he was born on Feb, 15, 1920, to Mr. Albert Stone and Mrs. Lillian (Agoney) Stone; Herman was the second of 16 children. Herman is predeceased by all of his sibling except for his brothers Ralph and Viola Stone of Tupelo, Miss., and Leon Stone of Plattsburgh, N.Y., his first wife Ruth (Dubuque) Stone, second wife Janice (Stevens) Stone, his children Edward (Junior) Brown, Richard Stone, Rodney Rivers, Arnold Stone, Dennis Stone.
Herman was a US Navy Veteran from WWII and a "LIFE" time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Peru, N.Y. Upon returning from the war Herman worked many jobs to make ends meet until he became a concrete mason and after completing his engineering degree from Syracuse University in 1950 his knowledge and skills were used to help build and rebuild buildings worldwide. Herman retired from the local Masons Union in 1983 as a "Master Mason" in 1985. Herman then relocated to Windsor, Va., where he continued to work as a mason until he finally retired completely from Masonry work.
Herman, an avid fisherman, spent many years doing what he loved to do. Upon turning 93 years old, he became a charter fisherman until he decided to return to the North Country in 2016.
Herman is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Brown (Liberty) Stone of Beekmantown, N.Y., Nancy and Lawrence Mitchell, West Milford, N.J., Sally and Gilbert Garrant, Plattsburgh, N.Y., Arthur and Daisy Stone, Windsor, Va., Molly Stone, Peasleeville, N.Y., Larry and Krista Stone, Oshawa, Canada, Peggy Rivers, Chazy, N.Y., Larry and Kathy Brown, Rouses Point, N.Y., Norean and Ray Durocher, Saranac, N.Y., Charlene Lapham, Peru, N.Y., Lynn and Bruce St. Pierre, Peru, N.Y., Alan and Nancy Liberty, Rapid City, S.D., Sue and David Hislop, Plattsburgh, N.Y., Star and Gordan Benjamin, Peru, N.Y., Terry and Robin Liberty of Peru, N.Y., Alison and Russell Nelson, Peru, N.Y.; his 48 grandhildren, 74 great-grandhildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, allowed him 5 generations of family members to which he was very proud of and all the things they have done with their lives.
There will be a small service and a celebration of life held at the Peru VFW on Thursday, April 25, 2019, on RT 22B.
