Florence Hussey Obituary

ROUSES POINT- Florence K. Hussey, 89 of Rouses Point, NY passed away Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Clinton County Nursing Home in Plattsburgh, NY surrounded by loving Family.

She was born February 5, 1929 in Plattsburgh, NY the daughter of Floyd King and Marion (Gibbs) King. Unfortunately Floyd King died at an early age and Florence was to live a year in Lyon Mountain, NY with Aunt Mit and Uncle Tony.  Her Mother Marion then remarried Earl Smith and Florence continued her life growing up in Champlain with her brother Bernie on Prospect Street.

She attended both Champlain Central and St. Mary's Academy in Champlain, NY.  Her sophomore year (1945) at St. Mary's she was named Class Treasurer.  Her 1945 class yearbook quote from St. Mary's states "Florence King has jazz and swing. She's got looks and everything".  She graduated in 1947 from Champlain Central. Florence participated in many school activities and sports. She was a High School cheerleader for Champlain Central.

After High School Florence attended and graduated from Loretta Business School in Plattsburgh, NY.  Her first employment was McKenna's in Rouses Point as a secretary.  The company now known as Pfizer.

First and foremost Florence loved her family unconditionally.  She loved life and lived it fully and loved to travel.  She took many wonderful trips all over this country including a cross country trip with her Aunt Lela to the western states to visit many relatives.  Her last trip and big hurrah was to the great State of Alaska with good friend Myrna Reid as her shipmate.

Over her lifetime she mastered many different sports and loved the outdoors starting as a child in Champlain skating on the river and skiing the local hills.  Her accomplishments in sports include downhill and cross country skiing, candlepin and regular bowling, snowmobiling, basketball, swimming and biking.  Her single greatest sporting love was the game of golf, she was introduced to golf in Port Henry; and continued playing throughout her life.  She played courses in Mane, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York State.  Her home course was the NCGC in Rouses Point.  She played numerous tournaments over the years and acquired several titles and trophies.  Florence was also a member of Three Steeples Church.

Florence loved to entertain and many wonderful parties were attended in her stately dining room in Rouses Point.  She also entertained many friends at the family camp on Point Au Fer in the summer months.  Florence, always the consummate hostess, loved dinners to include a theme, such as, fondue, Italian, Mexican and her famous Kentucky Derby parties.  Florence was famous for her delicious German chocolate cake and her outstanding rum cake.

Florence was predeceased by her parents; husband, Edward Hussey, stepfather, Earl Smith and step daughter, Mary Ann Russell.

She is survived by two daughters, Amanda (Brandon) Racine of Rouses Point, Catherine Spring of Plattsburgh; four grandchildren, Adam Racine of Rouses Point, Ivory Racine of Essex, VT, William Deso of Plattsburgh, Courtney Deso (Isaac De La Cruz) of Plattsburgh, NY; one brother, Bernie (Beulah) King of Mountain Home, Arkansas; one nephew, Bernie (Julie) King and their son Guthrie of Minneapolis, MN and great grandchildren, Scarlet Deso and Ethan De LA Cruz.  She is also survived by her lifelong friend, Jane Laplante of Champlain.

It was Florence's wish to have no calling hours.  A graveside service will be held at the convenience of her family in Glenwood Cemetery in Champlain.  The date and time will be announced in the future.  Donations in her name may be made to North Country Golf Club or Elmore SPCA.
