Betty Morrow Obituary

Altona – Betty Ann (Seguin) Morrow, 91, of Altona passed away on Wednesday, November 29th, 2023, after a brief illness, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Betty, along with her husband, Earl (deceased in 2016) were the founders, owners, and operators of the local landmark for 65 years, that everyone came to know as Morrow’s Store or Big Earl’s (opened and closed on Thanksgiving Day, years 1952 to 2017).

Betty was born May 29th, 1932, at home, in Ellenburg, NY. The Daughter of Joseph and Minnie (Facteau) Seguin. Betty graduated from Ellenburg Central School in 1950, and continued her education at The Loretta Business Institute, located (at that time) in Plattsburgh, NY. Back in the 1940’s & 1950’s it was uncommon for a woman to acquire an education beyond high school, Betty stepped out of that environment to be an educated and remarkably successful woman.

Betty, after graduation, began her adult life in the summer of 1950 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts (with her life-long friend Mae LaBarge); graduated from The Loretta Business Institute, then worked at the Ellenburg State Bank as a teller, took some time off to have children, entered the work force again, working at the Hydra Molding Plant,in Plattsburgh, and ultimately working at the Morrow’s Store” part-time and then full time(1952 to 2017), which both Betty and her husband, Earl Morrow, married for 65 years,work tirelessly to make a living, raising a family, hiring local employees, at times being good listeners to their employees and customers, and supporting their community. In 2016 (both Betty & Earl) were honored as Grand Marshals at the (2016) Altona Old Home Days, and the full circle of a happy life, the end of a local era.

Betty was a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters, was on the Holy Angles Church Council, and the Altona Central School PTA. She enjoyed her family, friends,and felted honored, to be a mother figure and friend to so many. Betty had the gift of motherhood, kindness, and friendship. Betty liked to bike ride, take long walks in the country, bowling in a local league, and spending time in her flower gardens.

Betty was predeceased by her parents (Joseph & Minnie Seguin), one son (Dennis) who passed away in 1972, eight brothers: Wilfred Seguin, Fred Seguin, Herbie Seguin, Lester Seguin, Peter Seguin, Gerald Seguin, Homer Seguin, Elmer Seguin;three sisters: Helina Seguin, Rita Parrott (Seguin), and Luva (Seguin) LaGoy.

 

Survivors include: three sons: Steven & wife Susan Morrow of Chateaugay, David & wife Janice of Amsterdam, Kevin and wife Dawn Morrow of Altona, one Sister-in-Law: Katherine (Morrow) Seguin of Ellenburg Depot, eight grandchildren: Melissa(Morrow) Ohashi & husband Michael Ohashi, Kristia (Morrow) Brownwood & husband John Brownwood, Jaclyn Morrow, Gregory Morrow & wife Nicole Morrow of Amsterdam, Kyle Morrow and partner Scott Gray, Chelsea (Morrow) Amon and husband David Amon, Richard Sequin Sr. and wife Holly of Churubusco, and Lisa Sequin; twenty great-grandchildren: Sean Ohashi and wife Carrera of Kent, WA, Liam Brownwood, Isaiah Brownwood, Maddison Brownwood, Kole Brownwood, Grace Brownwood, AubriannaAmon, Christopher Amon, Lucus Morrow, Hailey Morrow, Chloe Morrow, NathanielMorrow, Ahanu Sequin, Sowingwa Sequin, Dyami Sequin, Nashoba Sequin, Christian Garceau (deceased), Josh Sequin, Emilee (Sequin) Labombard, Rick Sequin Jr.; and four great-great-grandchild: Cortona Labombard, one by Joshua Sequin, and two others by Rick Sequin Jr.  She had many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Monday, December 4th, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Ross Funeral Home located at 2586 Route 11, Mooers, NY. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated, Tuesday, December 5th, 2023, at 1100 am the Holy Angles Church in Altona, N.Y.

A reception after Mom’s Funeral, will be held at the Rainbow Banquet Hall, located at 47 Woods Falls Road, Altona, NY, in the “Barn Hall” (location is just down the road from the Holy Angles Church)

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice or the Altona Fire Department.
