George A. Rivers Obituary

George A. Rivers, 88, of Rouses Point, passed away Friday, May 24th, 2024 at Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

 

He was born June 3rd, 1935, in Rouses Point to Lavern and Irene (Mitchell) Rivers.

 

George was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he was a Radio Specialist. George retired from Ayerst (Wyeth) Labs as a maintenance supervisor. George was a life long member of Rouses Point Fire Department and was a past chief. He was on the Board of Directors of the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, he was Deputy Fire Coordinator “Clinton County Car 3” for Clinton County, and taught the famous “Rookie Class” at the North Country International Fire School. George was Mayor of Rouses Point for 14 years and a member of the New York Conference of Mayors and the Municipal Electric Utilities Association of New York as well as a village trustee. He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Knights of Columbus. George was instrumental in getting the railroad museum in Rouses Point and was an avid supporter.

 

George is predeceased by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Rivers, as well as his parents and brother, John Rivers.

 

He is survived by his son, Christopher and his wife Teresa of Hudson, NY; daughter, Pamela and her husband Gregg Prewitt of Davidsonville, MD; as well as two grandchildren, Hunter Rivers and Alexander Prewitt.

Calling Hours will take place from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at the Ross Funeral Home, 2586 State Route 11, Mooers, NY 12958.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Church at 11:00a.m. in Rouses Point, NY, May 30, 2024. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montgomery Hose Hook and Ladder Co. or St. Patrick’s Church.
