Henrietta Babbie Obituary

Henrietta May Babbie, 94 of Champlain passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh, NY.

She was born in Coopersville, NY on April 30, 1926, to Willard and Aurore (Lafontaine) Ducharme, and was the eldest of their three children.

Henrietta graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Champlain, NY. She worked at Ayerst and later was the bookkeeper for the Duty Free Shops when the first store was opened at the U.S. / Canadian border.  The internet didn’t exist but she was able to work from home, a common occurrence today but not back then. She later worked for Peace Bridge Brokers and ended her working career with a new endeavor, babysitting her granddaughter Ashley.

Henrietta was married to Alfred (Sonny) Babbie on December 7, 1949 and had four children. Survivors include one son, Alan Babbie and his wife Rosaline; three daughters, Darlene DiBernardo, Donna Tallman and her husband George; Shirley Norton, niece (truly a daughter in every way) Karen Stiles Bechard, one brother Girard Ducharme and his wife Genevieve .  She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alex (Jen) Babbie, Zach (Dawn) Babbie, Sean (Nikki) O’Brian, Ashley (Corey) Letourneau, Natasha Tallman, Danielle (Ray) Taylor, Eric (Debby) Norton, Stephanie (Jon) Duke, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Sonny and sister, Helen LaValley.

Henrietta will be remembered for her sewing, knitting and crocheting prowess, her quiet demeanor (with a side of stubbornness), meme’s stuffing and her often used phrase to many situations, “What can you say?”  To that we say, we love you and will miss you dearly.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the people at Meadowbrook Healthcare who assisted us in taking care of her, especially the staff on Aspen View.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Meadowbrook Healthcare or the North Country Association for the Visually Impaired (NCAVI).

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, July 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Champlain.  Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery immediately following the service.
