Leonard Salvador Mercaldi Sr., 90, of Champlain (Perry’s Mills), New York, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025. Born on August 30, 1934, in Beverly, Massachusetts, Leonard lived a full and meaningful life defined by dedication to family, faith, hard work, and humor.

 

Leonard proudly served his country in the United States Armed Forces in his younger years. After completing his service, he married the love of his life, Nora Jean Mercaldi, in 1958. The two shared a beautiful life together until her passing in 2021.

 

In 1961, Leonard began working at Ayerst Laboratories, later acquired by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, where he devoted 36 years before retiring. A pillar of strength and consistency, Leonard was known not just for his work ethic but for the warmth and laughter he brought to those around him.

 

Leonard’s passions included tending to his garden, crafting homemade wine, and filling rooms with music through his singing and playing. A natural entertainer, his legendary “dad jokes” brought joy and laughter to generations of family and friends.

 

He is survived by his two sisters, June Pineault and Patricia Perkins; his six children: Leonard Mercaldi Jr. (Laurie), Francis Mercaldi (Lori), Maria Canty (David), Peter Mercaldi (Jody), Christina Marks (Matthew), and Shawn Mercaldi (Natalie); 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one eagerly awaited great-great-grandchild on the way.

 

Leonard's legacy is one of love, laughter, music, and deep-rooted family values. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

 

A Catholic Mass in celebration of Leonard’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Champlain, New York on Friday, July 11, 2025 at 11am.
