Melvin Laramie Obituary

 Melvin Vincent Laramie, 80, passed away December 12, 2020 at his home in Champlain after dealing with a number of illnesses, the last being aspiration pneumonia.  

 

Born October 9, 1940, in Plattsburgh, NY, Melvin was one of five children born to the late Albert and Golda (Brow) Laramie.  On August 27, 1966, he married Joyce M. Buesink of Sherman, NY.  Together they raised two sons.  Mark E. Laramie (Tina Stark) of Rome, NY, and Michael J. Laramie of Richmond, VT.

 

Survivors are his wife, Joyce and his two sons, Mark (Tina) Laramie and Michael Laramie.  He also has three grandchildren, Sydney (Kevin) Fisher, Max Laramie, and Eli Laramie.  He has one nephew, Todd Carpentier.  

 

He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Barbara (Richard) Carpentier, Erwin, James and Monica Laramie.

 

Mel attended Chazy Central Rural School.  Then he went on to attend Clarkson University where he received a chemical engineering degree.  He was then hired by Ayerst Laboratories in Rouses Point where he worked for 40 years with an additional two years as a consultant.  He started in the engineering department, was eventually promoted to Director of Engineering Services, and then advanced to Vice President of Engineering Services while the company was Ayerst.  When the company became Wyeth-Ayerst, he became Associate Director of Engineering and Maintenance and later  promoted to Director of Engineering and Maintenance.  Mel had a vast knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing involving equipment and utilities along with the ability to deal with complex engineering matters.  He oversaw the construction of many of the buildings at the Rouses Point facility.  He also provided technical assistance to all areas of the Rouses Point and Chazy operations.

 

Mel enjoyed playing golf with his buddies.  He also loved playing bridge, and it was his favorite lunch time activity while he was working.  He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees from his teenage years to now.  Mel was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Champlain, NY.

 

Due to Covid-19 the family will have a private service and burial will be held at a later time in the spring of 2021.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to Hospice of the North Country, 358 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
