Walter Richard (Dick) Stevens, 76, died suddenly on May 2, 2025 at his home in Champlain, NY.

 

He is survived by his wife, Gail, and daughter, Samantha. He was born in Danby, VT and attended Burr and Burton Seminary, graduating in 1967. He and his family resided in Bennington, VT for many years.

 

Dick worked at Stratton Mountain Ski Resort as a caretaker and later at Plasan USA in production with carbon fiber.

 

He had a large family. He was predeceased by his mother, Mabel (Tinney) Goodrich; father, Cecil Stevens; stepfather, Don Goodrich; and sister, Betty.

 

He is survived by brothers, Pete Stevens (Karen) and Raymond Stevens (Suzanne); sisters, Mary Pratt (Jim), Frannie Crow (Dolphus), Cele Colvin and Cookie McEllven (Scott). Numerous relatives, nephews and nieces survive as well.

 

Dick also served in the Army, stateside, during the Vietnam War. He was trained as a paratrooper and was at the Kent State murders in 1970. A Vermont native, in recent years, after retirement, he also resided in Georgia and New York with Gail and Samantha. Dick loved being outdoors in all kinds of weather. He also enjoyed gardening and looked forward to planting new plants and flowers every spring. Cooking, reading and fishing were some of the other things he always liked. He also had two beloved dogs, Micro and Pinkie, who followed him everywhere, as well as his cat, Sterling, who really misses his lap.

 

A family gathering at the Danby Cemetery will be held in May at the discretion of survivors. Interment will take place at the family plot.
