Wayne Dumont Obituary

Wayne Roland Dumont, 82, of Beekmantown passed away unexpectedly on February 28, 2025, at home with his beloved wife, Sheila, by his side.

Wayne was born in Plattsburgh on July 23, 1942, the oldest son of Roland and Calista (Fountain) Dumont.

He began his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Beekmantown, graduated from Mount Assumption Institute Class of 1960 and was a 1965 ROTC graduate of Siena College.

Upon graduation, Wayne received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 513th Military Intelligence Service Group USAREUR in Germany from 1965 – 1968. Upon his return stateside, he was destined for “several months of training” to prepare for a tour in Vietnam; however, Uncle Sam decided two weeks was sufficient. He was deployed to Binh Dong Province to serve as Senior Military Advisor to the PHOENIX Program, working closely with the CIA. Captain Dumont was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross along with seven U.S. military awards, including the Bronze Star Medal w/ Device which he received alongside Colonel George Patton IV, son of General George S. Patton.

Upon his return home in April 1969, Wayne purchased his parents’ general store in Beekmantown. Following a summer of renovations, the store became Brothers Five Tavern, hosting banquets and wedding receptions as well as local bands on weekends. As the family grew, it was time to look for a business with less nightlife. Wayne and Sheila opened the Town & Country Antique Shop in the fall of 1976 in the former Brothers Five building. For 49 years, Wayne took great pride in hunting down unique American antique furniture and collectibles. Since his early days in the Army, Wayne’s mantra was: Know your job better than anyone else and this strong work ethic was clear in everything he did.

Wayne loved the antique business; he was highly respected by his customers as well as fellow shop owners, auctioneers and dealers. He was a member of the New England Appraisers Association, and he served as chairman of the Beekmantown Planning Board for several years.

Wayne’s greatest accomplishment and joy was his family. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sheila (Neyenhouse), his son John Dumont (Vanessa) and daughter Sarah Fox (Edgar), five grandchildren: Adrienne Cadigan (Sean) and Daniel Dumont; Charlotte, Ava and Camilla Fox, and a large extended family including his cousin Paul Nadeau (Nancy) who was like a fifth brother. He is preceded in death by his parents and four younger brothers: Terry, Lynn, Dale and Timmy Dumont.
